Continuous Vigilance: Mandatory Triennial Psychological Re-evaluations
Continuous Vigilance: Mandatory Triennial Psychological Re-evaluations
Gun ownership is a lifelong responsibility that requires ongoing mental and emotional fitness. Therefore, we propose:
Regular Clinical Assessment: Every three years, all gun license holders would undergo a mandatory, standardized psychological re-evaluation conducted by licensed professionals. This assessment would focus on indicators of severe mental health deterioration, violent ideation, or other significant psychological impairments that could compromise public safety.
Confidentiality and Support: The process would be designed with strict confidentiality protocols, focusing on safety rather than punitive measures. If an individual shows signs of distress, the goal would be to offer support and resources, while temporarily suspending gun ownership until fitness is re-established.
Revocation Protocol: Should an individual fail this re-evaluation—meaning they are deemed no longer psychologically fit to possess a firearm—their gun license would be immediately revoked. Clear, fair, and transparent appeal processes would be established.
This ensures that the privilege of gun ownership remains with individuals who are consistently stable and responsible, mitigating risks associated with unforeseen life changes or mental health challenges.
